Miniature roses grown for the garden is fairly new to the UK although well established in the USA. Miniature roses are usually sold in pots which contain three or four plants. Most supermarkets and florists sell them as well as specialist rose stockists, nurseries and garden centres. The miniature rose in the UK is often thought of as a house plant and purchased throughout the year for special occasions, such as Mothering Sunday and birthdays. The miniature rose is effective as a border plant, and deters cats and free range chickens and ducks from going onto the beds, when they have prickly edging plants to contend with. Miniature roses also do well as a rockery plant in the summer, but as the roots may be restricted, watering in dry periods is essential. Care must also be taken not to overcrowd the miniature rose with more vigorous plants growing nearby.

Planting miniature roses, the ground needs to be prepared in a similar way to the planting of standard sized roses, in that the soil should be enhanced with nutrients, the roots of the miniature rose should be soaked for a minimum of two hours prior to planting. The miniature roses should be planted ideally in full sun or partial sun and shade, but never in shaded areas.

There are many varieties of miniature roses to choose from, and when bought from a rose stockist or garden centre the name of the rose, its growing habit should be labelled, unfortunately miniature roses bought from supermarkets rarely contain this information.
